Eastern Mediterranean University Dr. Fazıl Küçük Medicine Faculty has recently brought to life a Cell Culture Research Laboratory. EMU Dr. Fazıl Küçük Medicine Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Nahide Gökçora released a statement following the launch of the said laboratory:
“The Cell Culture Research Laboratory started its activities in December 2017 at Dr. Fazıl Küçük Medicine Faculty. The research conducted in the said lab started with the multiplication of the myeloid leukemia (CML), and K562 cancer cells. With the aim of forming a wide cell collection in the said lab, work on the multiplication different cancer cells has gained momentum. A large number of projects will be put into action during the current and the next academic year.”
Coordinator of Dr. Fazıl Küçük Medicine Faculty Multidisciplinary Laboratory Assist. Prof. Dr. Mümtaz Güran stated that the faculty has been undergoing remarkable development in research. In this respect, the new lab made new research on cell culture possible within the faculty. Assist. Prof. Dr. Güran also put forth that the faculty is working on the establishment of a multidisciplinary research laboratory which will create a good context for all types of medical research.
Dr. Fazıl Küçük Medicine Faculty Medical Biochemistry academic staff member Assist. Prof. Dr. Ergül Mutlu Altundağ put forth that the cell culture research laboratory has been established for the analysis of various cells at a molecular level. In the said lab, research on cancer (in vitro toxicology), cell genetics, biochemicals, and molecular biology will be conducted. Additionally, the faculty aims to carry out research on the molecular mechanism of various diseases and stem cell treatment at the said lab.
In a statement, Medical Biochemistry academic staff member Duygu Gençalp stated the faculty’s excitement on the establishment of the cell culture laboratory. Gençalp added that they have already started work on the production of different cell lines in the lab and in the near future, the faculty aims to contribute to the world of science through projects in the field of cell culture and molecular medicine.
