Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Dr. Fazıl Küçük Medicine Faculty and Marmara University (MU) International Joint Medicine Program 2024-2025 Academic Year Opening and White Coat Ceremony was held on Monday, 30 September 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Mustafa Afşin Ersoy Hall. Present during the ceremony were; Consul General of Famagusta İlyas Çetin, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç, Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Osman M. Karatepe, Prof. Dr. Salih Katırcıoğlu, Prof. Dr. Sonuç Zorlu and Prof. Dr. Ali Öztüren, Acting Dean of Dr. Fazıl Küçük Medicine Faculty Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nilüfer Güzoğlu, faculty members, students and their families.
The ceremony commenced with the observation of A Moment of Silence and National Anthem. In the ceremony, the Faculty of Education, Fine Arts Education Department, Music Teaching Program performed a musical recital.
Delivering a speech on behalf of the students, EMU Dr. Fazıl Küçük Medicine Faculty third year student Arda Özgöz welcomed the new students of the faculty, stating that the white coat are not pieces of clothing and that they symbolize the responsibilities of the profession. Özgöz also underscored that the white coat ceremony was the first step taken into a long and challenging journey.
“You will serve as a Source of Hope for Your Patients”
Acting Dean of Dr. Fazıl Küçük Medicine Faculty Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nilüfer Güzoğlu welcomed the new students of the faculty by saying; “Being admitted to the Faculty of Medicine is a remarkable achievement and a matter of pride. Starting today, you are embarking on your journey to commit your life to the well-being of others. You will undergo thorough training that encompasses not just theoretical knowledge, but also clinical skills, communication techniques, and research methodologies. This day marks the beginning of your medical career. Your white coats not only signify purity and cleanliness but also embody the values of precision, honesty, and ethics in your profession. You will serve as a source of hope for your patients. I wish you all a succesfull academic year. Wear your white coats with pride and a sense of duty”.
“Have a Strong Communicative Side”
Also welcoming and addressing the new students, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç expressed that any kind of studies conducted in the field of healthcare sector gets him excited. Stressing that no matter how qualified one can be, healthcare professionals must have a strong communicative side, Prof. Dr. Kılıç said; “Never forget to touch people’s hearts”. Providing information about EMU, Prof. Dr. Kılıç pointed out that the university, which is marking its 45th anniversary this year, continues to make a significant impact through its alumni worldwide. Prof. Dr. Kılıç mentioned that since 2009, EMU has focused heavily on the health sector, emphasizing that the Faculty of Medicine aspires to be a prominent and preferred medical school known both regionally and internationally, characterized by a robust institutional culture and identity, along with advanced education and research opportunities centered around students.

Continuing his remarks to the students, Prof. Dr. Kılıç stated; “I have full confidence that you will showcase the quality of the education you acquire here and, with a deep respect for ethical standards and a genuine compassion for humanity, meet the demands of your profession in the future. In just a moment, you will put on your white coats, signifying the beginning of your professional education and entering one of the most crucial phases of your lives. The white coat, regarded as a key symbol of medical education, symbolizes not only a fresh start for you but also your dedication and responsibilities within the medical field. I wish everyone a fruitful and successful 2024 – 2025 Academic Year, and I hope all our students achieve great success in their educational paths”.
Following the opening speeches, EMU Faculty of Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department academic staff member Prof. Dr. Hasan Demirel delivered the first lecture titled “Artificial Intelligence in Medicine”. After his speech, Prof. Dr. Demirel was presented with an appreciation plaque by the Acting Dean of Dr. Fazıl Küçük Medicine Faculty Assoc. Prof. Dr. Güzoğlu.
