Historical Meeting with Prof.Dr. VAMIK D. VOLKAN

One of the world's leading professor of psychiatry Prof. Dr. Vamık D. Volkan took part in the conference titled "Who are we now?" organized by Bellapais Inner Wheel Club at Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce auditorium on 10.06.2019 with the participation of EMU Dr. Fazıl Küçük Faculty of Medicine Founding Dean Dr. Nahide Gökçora and one of the first graduates of our faculty Dr. Barış Sarı.

Prof. Dr. Vamık D. Volkan, born in Serdarlı village in Northern Cyprus, is a world renowned social psychoanalyst retired from Virginia University Faculty of Medicine. Prof. Dr. Vamık D. Volkan has earned the titles of Guest Professor of Law at Harvard University, Guest Professor of Political Science at Vienna University and Guest Professor of Political Psychology at Bahçeşehir University. In addition, he has the title of Guest Psychiatry Professor at Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine, Ankara University and Ege University.  

As a result of his research Prof. Dr. Vamık D. Volkan mentions about a social identity problem in Cyprus and emphasizes that the social identity problem is one of the fundamental reasons of Cyprus problem which has not been solved for many years. Speaking about his satisfaction with the opening of borders and the environment it created, Prof. Dr. Volkan voiced that people from both sides are crossing the border while managing to protect their own identity successfully.

Prof. Dr. Vamık D. Volkan, his student EMU Dr. Fazıl Küçük Faculty of Medicine Founding Dean Prof. Dr. Nahide Gökçora and one of our first graduates Dr. Barış Sarı's presence at the conference brought three generations of doctor together in a meaningful picture.
