Published Date: Friday, 26 October 2018

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Dr. Fazıl Küçük Faculty of Medicine Faculty Member Op. Dr. Didem Rıfkı, gave a seminar to the Gazimağusa Türk Maarif Koleji (GMTMK) Students. The seminar titled ‘Upper Respiratory Infections and the Importance of Hand-Washing’ was held within the scope of the public awareness in the medicinal field events. Op. Dr. Rıfkı, drew attention to the importance of a cost- free and the most effective method of preventing the contamination of germs: hand-washing; especially in the upcoming winter period in which infections like cold or flu are more likely to emerge. As an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) and Head-Neck Surgeon, she said that informing the public about the commonly encountered diseases is more important than performing tens of surgeries or examining hundreds of patients at the polyclinic.

“A Student Who Is Ill Should Rest at Home”

Op. Dr. Rıfkı said that giving the start to these public health seminars at schools was not a coincidence: “As everyone knows, most upper respiratory infections spread very quickly. One reason for this is that we have to share crowded and closed environments with other people. In present-day conditions, a student who is ill should rest at home, and to prevent contamination, wash their hands and not share their personal belongings with others”. Also, Op. Dr. Rıfkı drew attention on the necessity for the right follow up and treatment of upper respiratory diseases since it is extremely important for preventing a possible antibiotic resistance.

Op. Dr. Rıfkı answered frequently asked questions concerning throat cultures, rheumatic heart disease and flu vaccines. She explained that these seminars and similar school visits will continue.
