As part of the 11th International Career Days organized in collaboration with faculties and schools, the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Alumni Communication and Career Research Directorate (EMU-MIKA) held a symposium titled "Medicine in the Light of Technological Advancements" at EMU Dr. Fazıl Küçük Faculty of Medicine.
During the symposium held at the Dr. Fazıl Küçük School of Medicine, EMU Vice Rector Responsible for Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. Hasan Demirel, and Dean of Dr. Fazıl Küçük Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Nahide Gökçora, were present alongside the students of the Dr. Fazıl Küçük Faculty of Medicine.
In their opening speeches at the symposium, the co-chairs and third-year students, Cemran Türkoğulları and Dilem Ömerağa, emphasized the importance of the relationship between medicine and technology in today's world. The said students discussed how technology's transformative impact is felt in various fields, ranging from diagnosis and treatment methods to patient care, data analysis, and artificial intelligence.
Prof. Dr. Nahide Gökçora, Dean of Dr. Fazıl Küçük Faculty of Medicine, highlighted that the COVID-19 pandemic directly affected lives in 2020 and 2021, and this year, the earthquake disaster also guided the community on the attitudes we should adopt regarding health. Prof. Dr. Nahide Gökçora emphasized that the integration of technological advancements into the field of medicine is crucially felt during these periods.
Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Dr. Demirel started his speech by extending his best wishes for the commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day. Discussing the importance of young minds in generating scientific knowledge, Prof. Dr. Demirel expressed his happiness to participate in an event organized by students as EMU is a student-centered university. Prof. Dr. Demirel stated that technological advancements increasingly support doctors in their decision-making processes but emphasized that technology cannot entirely replace doctors. Prof. Dr. Demirel also pointed out that progress can be achieved through multidisciplinary collaborations.
Following the opening speeches, Prof. Dr. Pemra Cöbek Ünalan delivered a presentation titled "Is There a Place for E-Health (Digital Health) in Primary Care Treatments?", Prof. Dr. Hasan Demirel discussed "Artificial Intelligence in Medicine: State-of-the-Art Technology, Current Trends, and the Future," and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emil Mammadov presented information on "Experimental and Surgical Applications with 3D Printers."
After the presentations, the certificate ceremony for the 2022-2023 Academic Year Fall Semester Honour and High Honour students took place. The certificates were presented to the successful students by the Vice Rector, Dean, and Faculty Members. Following the ceremony, a career meeting event was organized with Dr. Hülya Efetürk, Dr. Alptekin Özkoç, and Dr. Zehra Boracı. During this event, students were provided with advice regarding their career planning, and their questions were answered.
The symposium ended after workshops on "Laser and Suturing Techniques for Doctors" conducted by Dr. Didem Rıfkı, "What is Motivational Interviewing?" delivered by Prof. Dr. Pemra Cöbek Ünalan, and "How Do Oral Contraceptives Work? and What are Frequently Asked Questions?" presented by Dr. Soley Esmer.
